講評(comment)

This poem deftly captures the moment when the plane we are on descends below the clouds and into the rain as it nears our hometown. The charm of this haiku is largely dependent on one word, “up”: The tears of joy we feel upon returning to our birthplace, a very natural and common phenomenon, are given a new twist by being imaged as raindrops on the plane’s window, raindrops which, as we can easily observe, trickle up rather than down, as the plane descends and approaches home. It is almost as if our happiness is so powerful that it makes the rain fall upwards instead of down. This simple observation of rain falling up expresses the joy of homecoming in a fresh, original way. （Alan Rosen）

　この俳句は、作者の乗った飛行機が雲をかい潜り、雨中を降下して故郷に近づく時の一瞬の喜びを見事に捉えている。この俳句の魅力は「up」という一語の巧みな使い方である。「喜びの涙」は故郷に帰るときの自然な喜びであるが、それがここでは飛行機の窓を奔る雨滴によってイメージされている。雨滴自体は卑近なものであるが、飛行機が故郷に向かって降下する中で雨滴が下ではなく上に向かって窓を奔っているのである。その様は作者の高揚した幸福感を見事に表わしている。この素朴な一瞬の独創的な観察は作者の帰郷の喜びを表わし得て妙である。（アラン・ローゼン、和訳：西川盛雄）
